Inspiring Philanthropy
At The Montgomery County Foundation, Inc., we are dedicated to helping you articulate your philanthropic ideals and turning them into reality. With over 700 non-profit organizations throughout Montgomery County, there are endless opportunities to address critical needs and support causes close to your heart.
Creating Your Legacy
Our team works closely with donors to transform their wishes into a personal mission statement. Once your vision is defined, we guide you in establishing a fund that aligns with your philanthropic goals. Whether you want to make a difference during your lifetime or in perpetuity, we offer several flexible fund options:
1. Designated Fund
A Donor Designated fund enables the donor to designate one or more specific charities to receive annual distributions in perpetuity. If the original charitable organization ceases to exist or is unable to perform its charitable purposes, the Foundation will still honor the donor’s wishes by selecting alternative organizations providing similar services without the expense of legal action.
2. Donor-Advised Fund
The Donor Advised Fund is particularly attractive to a donor who wants to be involved in grant making activities. The advantages of this type of fund are:
- Participation in the grant-making process by recommending the charitable organizations to receive distributions
- Receive maximum tax benefits
- Possibly involving your family in philanthropic activities
- Access to the Foundation’s broad knowledge of Montgomery County, PA’s non-profit community.
- Make timely and advantageous gifts without time consuming administration costs.
3. Field of Interest Fund
The Field of Interest Funds support a general area of interest either current or geographic. The Field of Interest Fund does not designate a specific organization as beneficiary. A Field of Interest Fund can include, among others, the elderly, children and youth, environment, arts, health human services, education etc. They can also encompass specific Montgomery County, PA, geographic areas such as Willow Grove, Elkins Park, Norristown, Ambler, etc. The Foundation assists with distributions to the most impactful agencies.
4. Scholarship Fund
A donor who desires can provide scholarship to benefit young persons or those who wish to continue their education later. A Scholarship Fund can be set up to achieve this goal. The donor may also name a scholarship’s advisory committee and the guidelines for candidate selection, requirements and the use of the award.
5. Agency Endowment Fund
There are two types of Agency Endowment funds. An agency endowment can be a designated fund established by a charity at a community foundation for the charity’s own benefit or the benefit of a related entity. That is, the donor or resource provider and the beneficiary or recipient organization is the same entity. It can also be a type of designated fund that is established by a donor to benefit a specific public charity. At the Montgomery County Foundation, Inc., an agency endowment fund is established by a donor to benefit a designated charity. The agency endowment fund must be approved by the designated charity.
6. Unrestricted Fund
A donor can contribute to the Foundation in an unrestricted fashion and allow the Board of the Foundation to determine where the needs are the greatest to build strong communities.
7. Legacy Fund
A donor can establish a legacy fund which enables the Foundation to respond quickly and nimbly to ever changing community needs. Because the Foundation provides local stewardship of these funds, they are often timeless in terms of impact.
